A Gift That Keeps on Giving
Mabel and Lloyd Hobbs Chancellor’s Leadership Council Scholar Joe Geisbauer ’07 might have faced a different future without his scholarship
Joe Geisbauer, who graduated from UA Fort Smith in 2007, is on his way to earning a Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Nebraska. Coming from a middle-class family, he might have faced a different future without a scholarship to attend UAFS.
“The donors to my scholarship enabled me to be where I am today, to fulfill that college dream and be in graduate school right now,” he said.
Geisbauer was awarded a Chancellor’s Leadership Scholarship and eventually served as chair of the Chancellor’s Leadership Council. He gained experience in public speaking and worked on various faculty and student committees. “It gave me the background for many future situations,” he said. He is getting even more practice for his future goal—teaching college math—as a graduate teaching assistant in the classroom.
Geisbauer’s wife Kayde (also his high school sweetheart) earned an associate degree in dental hygiene at UAFS and is completing a bachelor’s degree online with the University of Missouri – Kansas City. Together they hope to establish a scholarship one day for students like them. “It’s a gift that keeps on giving,” he said. “You’re enabling people to use their gifts in ways that help others.”
